September Came Big, Details on Apple Event

ree

The big day is over and we have some new "Apple"s on the way. We will soon have iPhone 13s (including Mini and Pro), Apple Watch 7, iPad 9 and iPad Mini 6.

As always, Apple had a series of mini events throughout the year but we have expected (and found) that the September Event is the main. Like previous ones, due to Covid, the event was virtual from broadcasted Apple Park.

Though some were waiting for the Macbook's with M1X (or whatever new Apple Silicon processor will be called) processor will be announced, it seems we have a little while longer to see those. So let's take a look at what we have in hand, starting with the new iPhone series.

iPhone 13 Lineup

ree

Apple's most interesting launch is always the iPhones. This year (like 2020) we have the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

All 4 models has the same size with the 2020 models, being mini is the smallest (5,4 inches) and Pro Max is the largest (6,7 inches). They all have a 20% smaller notch, faster new A15 Bionic chip and larger batteries inside and improved 5g. The Pro models also has ProMotion, the dynamic 120 hZ refresh rated OLED screen.

So what separates them?

Mini is the smallest one (as stated by the name) but shares all other aspects with 13. Their screen is brighter than previous gen, 800 nits, compared than 600 nits for 12 series.

The lenses are placed diagonally, rather than the vertical placement of last year but the real thing is the wide camera now gathers 47% more light than the iPhone 12, thanks to a larger camera with 1.7μm pixels. Also the ultrawide camera can capture 4x more scene and has a better low light performance thanks to the new sensor.

As with the A14 Bionic, the A15 offers a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU, but there’s now a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning and AI, up from 8 cores on the previous chipset. Apple says it's 50% faster than A14 and although I am not into the benchmarks, I am sure they will perform way better than 12 series.

Also the battery has more real estate and this will give extra (Apple says 1,5 hrs) juice to the device. We will soon have some benchmarks about this with lots of info, but I know one thing for sure about batteries, bigger is better.

The price is 699 USD for Mini and 799 USD for 13, all have 128 gb HDD.

iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max

Pro series of iPhone have the best of the year, as always. Biggest batteries, exceptional camera features and some other various improvements over regular iPhones in same year's lineup. This time is no different. Pro series come with a stellar camera, bigger batteries and 120 hZ display.

The devices sharing the same flat edge design aspect of last year's 12 series and Mini/13. It is only the camera array which makes the difference, being larger. They are heavier than the predecessors (13 Pro Max is 8,46 ounces, 5% heavier than 12 Pro Max), which has an acceptable reason, bigger battery.

They come in 4 colors, graphite, gold, silver and sierra blue.

The biggest improvement to the iPhone 13 Pro series display is the new ProMotion display, which is also the biggest upgrade. The OLED panel can dynamically change its refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz, which results in smoother overall performance and animations. The screen is also now brighter, with 1000 nits.

Now comes the camera. The main wide camera sensor is now 1.9μm pixels (up from 1.7μm) while offering a f/1.5 aperture, which is rated to deliver a 49% more light than the iPhone 12 Pro. The ultrawide camera offers a larger f/1.8 aperture and the telephoto lens has 3x optical zoom (was 2,5x on 12 Pro). You may also use new ultrawide lens as a macro lens, which could take images as close as 2 cm away.

One new iPhone 13 camera feature is "Photographic Styles", letting you to shoot your photos with preset options including standard, rich contrast, vibrant, warm, cool.

Another big thing is "Cinematic Mode". Cinematic Mode utilizes Dolby Vision HDR and a technique called "rack focus" to seamlessly shift the focus from one subject to another when you're shooting video. It does this by locking the focus on the subject in a scene and blurring the background to achieve depth of field. This makes your home shoot videos seem more professional.

And at last, the best parts of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, battery life. Thanks to a larger battery (The Pro Max's battery is 4,373 mAh whereas the Pro's battery is reportedly 3,125 mAh) and other enhancements, the new Pro series give up to 28 hours of video playback on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 22 hours on the iPhone 13 Pro.

The price is 999 USD for 13 Pro and 1.099 USD for 13 Pro Max, all have 128 gb HDD.

Stay Tuned...
